Abandoned after 1583, the castle has gradually become dilapidated and it was not until 1977 that the structure was conserved and opened to the general public. A fine example of small, fortified medieval structures, Jenštejn boasts remarkably sophisticated architecture. The castle tower contains a chapel and a staircase leading to the top of the tower with a view of the area. There is a display dedicated to aerial archaeology and the history of Jenštejn Castle.

Michalovice castle is situated in the Jizera valley, close to Mladá Boleslav. This is a ruin of a gothic castle from the 13th century, which was abandoned in the 16th century. It has a characteristic sloping tower entitled Putna (tub), which was undermined during searching for treasures in the 19th century. The tower bears a plaque to commemorate the visit of poet K.H. Mácha.

***

Almost on the outskirts of Mladá Boleslav, above a hamlet of the same name, you cannot miss huge ruins with a leaning tower called Putna. Founded after 1270, Markvartice Castle ceased to serve as a residence sometimes prior to the 16th century. The tower deflected from its vertical axis due to the activities of treasure hunters. Today the tower affords magnificent views of the Jizera Valley and across the northern part of the Mladá Boleslav area. The poet K. H. Mácha appreciated this when he visited the ruin in 1835.

Near Benátky nad Jizerou you can explore the ruins of Dražice Castle, which was completed by Jan IV of Dražice, Bishop of Prague, in the latter half of the 13th century. The bishop invited French master builders, who primarily used bricks for construction materials, to build his family seat. In 1424, under Aleš Škopek of Dubá, the castle was burnt to the ground. The destruction was completed by the forces of George of Poděbrady. The remains of a tower, with a chapel featuring parts of Gothic rosettes in its windows, and massive walls are the only remnants of this, once the most remarkable structure of its kind in the region.

The castle was built, at the end of the 10th century, by Boleslav I., the present form with preserved late-Gothic and Renaissance elements originates from the second half of the 18th century. The permanent museum expositions present chapters from the history of Mladá Boleslav and the surroundings, moreover, in the playroom the small and large visitors of the castle may have a game of a museum.

The Okor village is first mentioned in 1228 as a property of St George Monastery in Prague Castle (klášter sv. Jiří na Pražském hradě). A Gothic castle was built here in 1359 by a wealthy burgher of Prague’s Old Town Frantisek Rokycansky, what was quite unusual in those times, when most castles were built by noblemen.

In 15th and 16th centuries The Okor Castle was extended and rebuilt in the late Gothic (around 1494) and Renaissance (by the Martinic family around 1590) styles. In the 17th century the castle was owned by Jesuits, during the Thirty Year’s War it was heavily damaged and then restored in the Baroque style. After the Jesuit order was discontinued in Bohemia, the Okor castle was deserted in the late 18th century and quickly changed to ruins.

Divci Kamen. The name of the castle originated from the German word Stein – stone or castle and the word Maget (Mogt) – a girl or a maiden. The castle was called either the German word Maidstein (Menštejn) or the Czech juncture of words Dívčí Kámen (”Maiden’s Stone”) that is used up to the present day.

Within today’s castle ruins a hill-side habitation was spread. This habitation was settled during several primeval periods. The centre of the habitation was destroyed when the castle was built, only some remains on the north and the north-east slopes were preserved. At the turn of the earlier and middle Bronze Ages the fortified community was established there. It was protected with mound from better accessible sides.

The Gothic Dívčí Kámen castle was built during two stages. Between 1350 – 1360 the residential centre with a two floor north palace and the walls around were built. The eastern palace, the third floor of the northern palace with chapel and stone wall of the extramural settlement were built before 1383. At the first half of the 15th century the extramural settlement was extended on the north side to the eastern palace tower and it was fortified with two prismatic bastions. The castle was composed of three parts – the residential castle itself, the upper barbican and extramural settlement, “latrán” (a lateral long street leading to a town) built later on the south. The Dívčí Kámen castle was a typical example of the Gothic castle architecture at the times of the emperor Karel IV. The residential centre of the castle was made of two three floor palaces that contained a regular courtyard in their closed sides. Three rooms with the wooden ceiling and the windows situated at the courtyard were on each of the floors – ground floor and two upper floors of the palace. On the third floor of the northern palace there was only one hall with windows also in the external wall and with the arch on the northern part, which opened to the bay chapel. The way to the castle ran through three castle gates.

Today the Dívčí Kámen castle with its 210 metres of length and 45 metres of width is one of the biggest castle ruins in Bohemia. Parts of the walls of the upper and lower castle and also parts of the castle fortification were preserved.
